TITS MCGEE.: Beyond Fandom Wank: Why Criticizing Pop Culture is Important in Real Life
I’m sorry but not everyone criticizing b-mommy’s behavior was doing anything of the sort, and as one of those who was and wasn’t anonymous about it, I am insulted at the implication that my criticisms and those of others ought be lumped in with everyone else who took the controversy as an opportunity to stick the knife in.
There were quite a few people with perfectly reasonable things to say who did not make a single death threat, nor attack her value as an individual. That the entire issue is now and has been only being discussed in the context of what the anon trolls had to say is as frustrating as it is annoying. I said nothing that I am remotely bothered by, ashamed of, regret, or wouldn’t say again to someone acting similarly. Furthermore, I would not take issue with others holding me to the same standards I asked of her.
I didn’t get a single hate Ask or negative response from anyone at the time who wasn’t b-mommy, who herself responded to my moving on with embarrassingly transparent passive-aggression, which is basically evidence of the same attitude I was criticizing her for having in the first place.
So in short: Of course being critical of pop culture is important. But the controversy was more than that. It had to do with her judgmental, abrasive, and casually presumptive “in-character” attitude. Calling her out on any of these things in isolation has nothing to do with the cause of social justice and everything to do with her.
